Without You, I Am Nothing.

But he said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness." Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ's power may rest on me." -2 Corinthians 12:9

This week marked our first "real" week back to school. It's true that we started a few days prior but this was the first week that resembled what a typical week will look like this semester. In the beginning of the week, I was literally weak. I'm generally not one who loves change (although I recognize that change is inevitable and is really a good thing). At the start of the week, I was struggling a lot and feeling overwhelmed by the demands and stresses of school. I knew all of this was simply due to the fact that I had not established a routine quite yet, however, I was left feeling out of sorts and kind of in a funk ha. Well, God had a plan for this feeling (as He always does) and was using it to remind me of my utter dependence upon Him. This week it was very clear that on my own, I am absolutely nothing but a weak, lost, and sinful being. Without Him, I have no hope, nothing to live for, and nothing to find joy and peace in.

The Gospel demands that we be dependent upon God, just as Jesus lived a life fully dependent upon His Father. Jesus, while on this earth, did not think any thought, speak any words, or perform any action apart from what His Father was thinking, speaking, and doing. Rather than go around claiming that He could do everything, Jesus recognized his utter dependence upon God and said in John 5:19, "Very truly I tell you, the Son can do nothing of himself; he can only do what he see his Father doing, because whatever the Father does the Son also does." See friends, even our very Savior recognized that He needed our Heavenly Father and was in a completely dependent relationship with Him in which he was constantly seeking to think, speak, and act as He would.

I was reading an article recently in Leslie Ludy's "Set-Apart Girl" magazine (girls, you really should check it out...http://setapartgirl.com/home.html). The article states that "Nothing less than an unbroken relationship of entire reliance upon Jesus Christ makes the victorious Christian life possible." I just love this because it's so true. In John 15:5, Jesus tells his disciples, "I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing." Without Jesus Christ, we are nothing and we can do nothing.

This truth has been made even more real to me recently, as revealed through my relationship with Jeremy. As a small and weak girl, I delight in the strength that Jeremy possesses. I feel safe and secure when he wraps his arms tightly around me and am comforted by his ability to protect me. I depend on his strength and don't walk around resenting his help or trying to prove that I don't need him. Instead, I am joyful in knowing that he will not use his strength to harm me, but only to help me. Likewise, this is true of our relationship with our Heavenly Father. We must remember that "Christ's power is made perfect in our weakness" and when we are weak, He is strong! Just as I find security in being held in Jeremy's arms, even more must we find security in knowing that the Maker of the Heavens and the Earth is with us always and He will fight for us! Rather than going around with anxiety and fear over what we lack, we must instead run right into the arms of our King who will certainly give us the strength and grace to carry out His will!

As you go about this day, recognize that you are completely dependent upon Jesus. We must present ourselves as the empty and broken people that we are apart from Him and be joyfully dependent and ceaselessly reliant upon Him. We need Jesus' strength to carry us through; for while we can't, He can!

*Here are a few songs I've found a lot of encouragement from recently. Hope they help you too!

New Year's News.

Well hello 2012! I can’t believe it’s a whole new year and another semester is knocking at my door. I feel like I just got on Christmas Break yesterday and here we are about to go at it again! So much has happened over the past several weeks and I’ve been able to enjoy some much appreciated time to relax and celebrate with my family and friends. This break has been filled with one fun thing after another…literally. Every single day has been showered with blessings and I’m so thankful for all the fun times and memories that were made. Looking back, a few things stand out. For one, I had a wonderful Christmas and enjoyed celebrating our Savior’s birth with both sides of the family. It was great getting to spend time with everyone and our time with Nanny and Pappy was especially sweet this year in light of their recent illnesses. I also think of all the movies our family watched and the lazy days we spent together simply resting and being still. I’m reminded of Jeremy’s visit and the crazy things we did together (swing dancing as a family, eating lots of food, and throwing mom a surprise party for her 50th Birthday!). Even more, Jeremy and I got to go on our first official date and I felt like the luckiest girl in the world (yep, that’s right folks…we’re officially dating now haha) :) Finally, as if the break wasn’t great enough, we topped it off with a trip to Atlanta for Passion 2012 where we were able to worship the Lord alongside 45,000 of our closest friends ha! Seriously, could life be any sweeter?!
This break was truly exceptional and I’m sad to see it come to an end. Yet despite the impending classes, homework, and inevitable chaos of school, I’m excited for this coming semester and all that lies ahead. I find great comfort in the fact that even though I’m not sure what the future holds, I know the One who holds my future and I know He has a perfect plan. I’m excited to get back into a routine, to be reunited with my wonderful friends, and to get back to serving and loving our friends at Woodhill. This semester, I’m praying that I would have BOLDNESS to fearlessly proclaim the mystery of the Gospel (Ephesians 6:19-20). I want to be used, to be willing to let God lead me according to His will and His ways. I pray that He’ll prepare divine opportunities for me to show and share His love with those He’s placed around me and that He’ll give me the words I need to tell others about Him. I pray for my classes, my teachers, my peers, and my campus. I pray for Woodhill and the incredible friendships God has entrusted me with. I pray that His presence would be felt in this community and in the homes of those He’s led us to and allowed us to do life alongside of. I pray they will hunger for more of Him and that His power would flood the streets of this broken city. I pray for my relationship with Jeremy and ask that God would continue to use us as a team to bring glory to His great name, as well as, that the Enemy would not be allowed to gain a foothold in the work God is doing in both of us. I pray for my friends and for my family and ask that God would move in mighty ways in their lives and that they would seek Him above all other things. Finally, I pray that I would live and love others boldly, so that they may see Jesus in me. I want to love the Lord, my God, more intimately and to love those He’s placed around me more intentionally.

So here’s to another semester. And here’s to letting God take the reigns wherever He wants to lead me. [[I’m not my own. I lay me down. I belong to YOU alone. Lay me down. Lay me down.]]
